A floor bed, with edges

Fair to both sides: what a floor bed gets right, and what floor-bed families said after switching.

Floor-bed independence, kept. The climb-in is the whole point.

If you've got a Montessori floor bed — or you're deep in the tabs deciding between one and this — this page is for you, and I'll try to be fair to both sides. I work at Lifely, but floor beds are a good idea. Independence, autonomy, no bars, no drop. We agree with all of it.

What floor-bed families told us anyway

The most useful review we've ever received on this subject is this one, verbatim:

★★★★★

“Best purchase, we had Montessori floor bed before, we decided it to buy this bed instead and best thing we ever did. So easy to put together and our 1 year old loves it The colour is amazing!!! (Pistachio)”

"Best thing we ever did" is her words, not mine. So what's the difference between a mattress on the floor and this?

A floor bed gives you

  • Independence — they get in and out alone
  • No fall height
  • Montessori-aligned autonomy

This keeps all that, and adds

  • A padded perimeter — a nest, not an open ledge
  • Off the floor — airflow under the bed, less cold-floor sleeping
  • A defined edge — fewer 2am wanderers mid-roll
  • Covers that unzip and machine-wash at 30°

The sides sit at 25–36cm — low enough that the climb-in stays theirs, which is the part of the floor-bed philosophy worth keeping. It's a floor bed with edges, honestly. That's the pitch.

Who should keep the floor bed

If your floor bed is working — kid sleeps, everyone's happy — keep it. Genuinely. Don't buy a $599 upgrade to a solved problem. This is for the floor-bed houses where someone keeps rolling off onto the boards, where the mattress-on-floor look has worn thin, or where winter made the floor the coldest place in the room.

And if you're not sure which house you are: “30 days to try it out. Not in love? We’ll pick it up, recycle it, and give you a full refund.” Run both for a month and let the kid vote with their feet.
