A home creates a foundation for change for families like Pramila’s.
“I used to sleep tightly hugging my children because I used to fear the wind blowing the roof away”, said Pramila.
“Once during the monsoon, the winds ripped the roof from one side of our shack. All our belongings – television, clothes and food were drenched in rainwater.”
Like all of us, Pramila has happy memories of her home. But living in a sub-standard shack means these memories are few and far between.
During the Festival of Light (known as Tihar), Pramila’s neighbours would light up their houses with bright lights and oil lamps. Seeing this, Pramila’s children would want to decorate their own house with lights too. But without space, a yard or the money to buy lights, they would go without.
“To uplift them I used to light up a few candles. All the houses of the neighbours would be lit up bright and beautiful. But since we couldn’t, they always felt heartbroken.
My children always asked me when they would have the chance to light up their home like their neighbours? I consoled them by saying ‘one day, we shall!’
Through the support of E-Living, more families like Pramila’s can partner with Habitat in the building of their own forever home. “The day we partnered with Habitat to build our new house, the first thing my son said was, “We can light up our house bright during Tihar!”
They are extremely happy and love their new home.
Thank you for supporting the right of every family to have a safe and decent place to live.
